What is Compost?

Most people have heard of compost, but it might surprise you to know that many people do not have a solid understanding of exactly what compost is. No, it isn’t just soil or aggregate, it’s a mixture of various ingredients which are used to fertilize and improve the condition of soil in outdoor spaces. Generally speaking, compost is comprised of decomposing organic material, like food waste, which means it’s rich in nutrients and home to helpful organisms, like fungal mycelium and worms. Of course, the exact type of compost you choose will determine its impact on your landscape.

Types of Compost

As mentioned previously, there a wide range of compost varieties to choose from, and which one you go with will have a major impact on the condition of your soil – and, of course, this will have a considerable impact on the health and growth of any plants that are present as well. On the whole, most people will split compost into five broad categories: peat based compost, organic compost, peat free compost, and all-purpose compost. Naturally, we have a number of choices within each category as well – so you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Broad Benefits

There are plenty of reasons to use compost in your landscape or garden, and they’re all worthwhile. The principal benefit of using compost is that it majorly improves the condition of your soil, strengthening the structure, helping to maintain moisture levels, and regulating your soil’s pH balance whilst preventing any harm to plants from disease. Beyond that, it’s an environmentally sound practice, since it can reduce food waste and help with plant growth, which positively impacts the planet.

Mulch or Compost?

Some people confuse mulch and compost, and that’s not such a surprise – they’re both supplements that are used to improve the condition of soil – even so, they’re certainly distinct from one another. While organic mulch is used on the uppermost layer of your soil, compost is used beneath the top layer. Further to that, compost is generally decomposed, while that is not the case for mulch, speaking generally. If you want your soil in the optimal condition, it’s advisable that you use both of these.
